My Diwali Look

Happy Diwali!!

To all those that celebrated last weekend, Happy Diwali and all the best for the new year ahead!
I love Diwali as it's a time for family, fun, and plenty of food and it's a lovely opportunity to reflect on the last year (in Hindu years) and look towards the forthcoming year.

Diwali is the festival of light and the festival amplifies the message of light over dark, good over evil and hope over despair. Temples and homes will be lit up around the world with divas and candles and it is truly beautiful.

When I think about what Diwali represents, I see it as a chance to look to the future with hope and happiness, and to see the light in any situation.

This year I spent Diwali with family and enjoyed the festivities, and at University I attended a Diwali Ball hosted by our Indian Students Association, which was fantastic. So nice to get dressed up and dance the night away!

This was my look for Diwali. Below I will detail how I created this look :)

My outfit is a traditional Anarkali suit.

I started with my hair. I did this hairstyle on clean blow-dried hair. I first used the Paul Mitchell Extra-Body Daily Boost and applied that to my roots to give my hair an extra lift. I find that it is a good idea to use volume boosting products when creating specific up-do hairstyles.
Firstly make the side-quiff. Section the front part of your hair to be used in the quiff and using a comb, backcomb the inside.

Use hairspray to hold the hair, then position the hair to the side and 'quiff' it up and using bobby pins, secure the quiff.

Once the quiff is done, lightly curl the rest of your hair. My hair is naturally wavy anyway so I don't have to do this too much. To create the side bun, use a hair doughnut (mine was from Boots). You can also use two socks (preferably a similar colour to your hair), cut the ends off them and attach them together to create a doughnut.

Gather all your free hair together to one side and starting from the tip of the hair start rolling the doughnut up collecting the hair as you turn it up using both hands. Make sure that your hair is covering the whole doughnut as you do this. This is not the generic way to make a doughnut bun but as this is a messy sidebun, this technique is much better. So you are turning the bun through as if you are turning it inside out, and make sure you do this until you  can't roll anymore and have included all of your hair.

You then have to secure the bun using bobby pins, but as you have used this technique to roll the bun, it should stay quite secure as the hair is rolled up in the doughnut. You then need to make sure the hair is fully covering the doughnut, and also attached any hair that is stray using tipped wavy hairpins.

Once the bun is secure you can pull out small strands of hair from the bun to 'messy it up' a little bit and also on the opposite side you can pull some strands out (as shown in the first picture). Below is how it looked from the side and behind.

I then started my make up. I first applied Smashbox Luminizing Photo Finish Foundation Primer to a cleansed and moisturised face. I then used the Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer kit on the darker areas on my skin particularly around the eye. I applied a small amount of my Bobbi Brown Moisture Rich Foundation in colour 'Honey' using the Real Techniques Expert Face Brush, in circular motions, covering my face and applying below the face edge, blending with the neck.

For my eye make-up I used the Fade to Black Photo Op Eyeshadow Palette by Smashbox, in the fade in colours, to create a creamy/pink smokey eye.
1)  I used colour 2 to cover the eyelid, then loaded my brush with colour 4 and half way across my eyelid started to apply the colour.
2)  I then loaded my brush with colour 6 and starting from the lash line, added the colour moving upwards and inwards towards the colour 4 and also applying it gently to the crease of the eyelid.
3)  I then aded colour 1 to the inner corner of the eye to brighten that area.
4)  I also had to use the 'Toasted' colour from my Urban Decay Naked Palette to add a little more pink to the eye.
5)  Using a Real Techniques Shading Brush I blended the colours together to create the pink smokey eye.
6)  To finish my eyes, I used the MAC Technakohl Liner in Graphblack to line my eyes and used L'OrĂ©al Volume Million Lashes Excess Black Mascara on my eyelashes.

To complete my looked I used MAC bronzer in Refined Golden to contour and added MAC Blazing Haute Blusher to the cheekbones. I then used Bobbi Brown Sheer Colour Cheek Tint in Sunlit Nude 13 on the tops of my cheeks, by rolling the tint on the cheeks and using the fingertips to smooth it out (smile whilst applying this) and also used this on the brow bone to highlight the eyes.
For my lips I applied Nivea Lip Butter in Vanilla and Macadamia, then used MAC Stripdown Lip Liner and MAC Angel Lipstick, finishing by adding a little bit of Bobbi Brown Lip gloss in Tangerine 15.

I also accessorised my outfit with traditional jewellery and a selection of bangles!

And thats how I created my Diwali 2013 look!

Love Nimisha
